Beginners Guide To Meditation
This is not about clearing your mind and thoughts.
A common misconception about meditation is that you have to clear your thoughts. That is not true. We have around 50,000 thoughts a day, so it would be near impossible to just stop them in their tracks.
The trick to meditation is to allow your thoughts to come in and allow them to keep going. Try not to get stuck on a thought, and if you do-remind yourself that this is just a thought, and bring yourself back to what it feels like to breathe. How the air moves in and out of your nostrils.
I prefer starting out with guided meditations. You can find simple and easy ones on YouTube. There are many to choose from so I think the best ones to start out with are body scan meditations. This type of meditation helps you to relax but also be present and aware of what is going on in your body.
First, find a place where you won’t be interrupted, you can relax, and have enough time to finish the meditation. I recommend finding ones that are at least 12 minutes long-the reason for this is that there is research saying that doing at least 12 minutes daily can actually change they way your mind works for the positive!
Imagine being less triggered, get better quality sleep, think through problems easier, be more creative, relax your nervous system-there are a lot of physical and mental qualities that can improve with meditation.
Second, once you have found your comfortable place-pick a guided meditation to listen to. All I want you to do for the first meditation is listen. Try your best to follow along with the guide.
That is it!
All I ask is that you try it and see how you feel before and after.
